Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the eyelids by removing excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. If done correctly it can make a huge impact on your appearance with minimal risk.
Why have Eyelid Surgery
There are many reasons why someone might decide to undergo blepharoplasty surgery. These include:
Cosmetic Enhancement: Blepharoplasty can address signs of ageing such as sagging skin, wrinkles, and puffiness around the eyes, helping individuals achieve a more youthful and vibrant appearance.
Improved Vision: In some cases, excess skin or fat on the upper eyelids can obstruct vision, causing functional impairment. Blepharoplasty can remove this excess tissue, improving both appearance and vision.
Enhanced Confidence: By rejuvenating the eyelids and reducing aesthetic concerns, blepharoplasty can boost self-esteem and confidence in one's appearance.
In addition to cosmetic reasons, there are several conditions, such as Thyroid Eye Disease, which are quite disfiguring. Patients with these conditions can have blepharoplasty surgery to restore the natural appearance of their eyes. This is a highly specialised surgery and should only be performed by a specialised and experienced Oculoplastic surgeon, such as Mr Salvi.
How is Blepharoplasty Surgery Performed?
Blepharoplasty surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthetic with sedation, or general anaesthetic, depending on the extent of the procedure and your preference.
Upper Blepharoplasty: This procedure involves making incisions along the natural creases of the upper eyelids to remove excess skin, fat, and muscle. The incisions are carefully closed to minimize scarring.
Lower Blepharoplasty: For lower eyelid rejuvenation, incisions may be made either along the lash line or inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival approach) to access and remove excess fat and tighten lax skin and muscles.
Combination Blepharoplasty: In some cases, both upper and lower eyelid surgery may be performed simultaneously to achieve comprehensive rejuvenation of the entire eye area.
Should I See a Plastic Surgeon or an Oculoplastic Surgeon for my blepharoplasty?
While both plastic surgeons and oculoplastic surgeons are qualified to perform blepharoplasty, oculoplastic surgeons have specialised training in both ophthalmology and plastic surgery specifically focused on the delicate structures around the eyes.
Currently, in the UK all surgery performed on eyelids is done by oculoplastic surgeons, as it is recognised, that they are the best trained to perform this surgery.
Oculoplastic surgeons have a deep understanding of the eye and can anticipate any issues that may affect the surgery. They can fully examine your eye and they place the health of the eye at the centre of any surgery that is performed.
