Frequently Asked Questions

Will eyelid surgery affect my vision?

In most cases, vision improves if drooping skin was obstructing sight. Blepharoplasty does not affect your actual eyesight.

Are scars visible?

No. Incisions are hidden within natural creases or inside the eyelid. Over time, scars fade to fine lines.

How long will results last?

Most patients enjoy results for 8–10 years or longer, depending on lifestyle and skin type.

Is blepharoplasty painful?

Discomfort is mild and easily managed with pain relief. You may feel some tightness for a few days after surgery.

Recovery and What to Expect

Recovery timeline:

We would expect mild swelling and bruising are common for 7–10 days. Stitches (if present) are removed after one week.

Most patients return to normal daily activities within 10–14 days.

Results:
After healing, the eyes appear more open and refreshed, without changing your natural expression. Results are long-lasting and subtle. Enhancing, not altering, your appearance.

Blepharoplasty is very safe in experienced hands. Rare risks include temporary irritation, dry eyes, or slight asymmetry. Mr Salvi will discuss all risks clearly during your consultation.

Should I See a Plastic Surgeon or an Oculoplastic Surgeon for my blepharoplasty?

While both plastic surgeons and oculoplastic surgeons are qualified to perform blepharoplasty, oculoplastic surgeons have specialised training in both ophthalmology and plastic surgery specifically focused on the delicate structures around the eyes.

Currently, in the UK all surgery performed on eyelids is done by oculoplastic surgeons, as it is recognised, that they are the best trained to perform this surgery.

Oculoplastic surgeons have a deep understanding of the eye and can anticipate any issues that may affect the surgery. They can fully examine your eye and they place the health of the eye at the centre of any surgery that is performed.

Mr Salvi is a highly experienced ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon. He will work with you to determine the most suitable procedure based on your individual needs and lifestyle preferences.

How Blepharoplasty Is Performed

Blepharoplasty surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthetic with sedation, or general anaesthetic, depending on the extent of the procedure and your preference.

Upper Blepharoplasty: This procedure involves making incisions along the natural creases of the upper eyelids to remove excess skin, fat, and muscle. The incisions are carefully closed to minimize scarring.

Lower Blepharoplasty: For lower eyelid rejuvenation, incisions may be made either along the lash line or inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival approach) to access and remove excess fat and tighten lax skin and muscles.

Combination Blepharoplasty: In some cases, both upper and lower eyelid surgery may be performed simultaneously to achieve comprehensive rejuvenation of the entire eye area.

Why Choose Eyelid Surgery?

People choose blepharoplasty for many reasons:

  • Cosmetic improvement — to correct sagging or puffiness and achieve a younger, brighter look.

  • Improved vision — in some cases, overhanging skin can obscure sight; surgery can restore a full visual field.

  • Comfort and confidence — removing excess skin often relieves heaviness and improves self-esteem.

  • Medical conditions — including Thyroid Eye Disease or eyelid changes caused by age, injury or genetics.

Because eyelid anatomy is complex, it’s essential to choose an experienced specialist. Mr Sachin Salvi is a Consultant Oculoplastic and Ophthalmic Surgeon based in Sheffield, offering expert assessment and care for patients from Derbyshire, Nottingham and Leeds.

Blepharoplasty

Your eyes are often the first feature people notice, and one of the first to show signs of ageing. Over time, the skin around your eyes can lose elasticity, leading to drooping, puffiness, or a tired appearance.
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a delicate procedure designed to remove or tighten excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids, helping you look more awake and confident.
